The Art of Communication

Standard

Communicate: share and exchange information; pass on or convey

A senior manager in our Internal & Corporate Communications Department has the below quote at the bottom of her email:

“The biggest single problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place” a quote by George Bernard Shaw.

Communication is truly an art that individuals develop as they go along in life. So many times, we are misunderstood and it leads you to wonder, if you spoke clearly or did you articulate your thoughts properly. A person can communicate in so many ways without uttering a single word and they are understood clearly. But, the minute they open their mouth to speak, everything they say is misinterpreted. It makes me wonder about the dynamics of life and how we exist in this world. There are so many distractions in the communication process that I don’t know how we get the message half the time one is sent to us.

How can we communicate more effectively? One important thing to do is listen.
